Dragon stinks! Right??!

Dragon stinks!

Some time ago someone enquired in a forum after speech recognition software. But only a program that actually works! “Not Dragon, Dragon stinks!”

When I hear someone say that, I usually wonder what went wrong in the relationship between that person and their Dragon. Didn’t they ever hit it off? Did they fall out of love with the beast?

Out of love

Today, I know the answer: they probably fell out of love with Dragon. How can I be sure? Because today I really do not like my Dragon very much. At all.

I work in the Netherlands as well as internationally online, so I frequently switch between the Dutch and the English language. To be honest, that already is a bother in itself. It would be bliss if I could just start dictating in a language and Dragon would get it right. For the moment that is a pipedream and I have – mostly – accepted the 30-60 second delay that it takes to switch languages.

However! Today the Dragon is totally misbehaving. As soon as I switch from English to Dutch or vice versa the microphone takes forever to respond. Several times I’ve had to reopen the user profile because Dragon got stuck.

Do I really have to do that?

Now… if I were my client I would advise myself to restart the computer. 99% sure that this will solve the issue. And if I give this advice to a client, it doesn’t bother me at all. Just restart the computer, no big deal. But now that I myself need to restart my computer, I’m suddenly quite annoyed. It shouldn’t be necessary; Dragon should just be able to switch between languages without throwing a tantrum!

Why I still love my Dragon

So, does Dragon really stink? Sometimes it does. But even if my Dragon doesn’t smell of roses all the time, I still wouldn’t want to do without it. I may sometimes be briefly disenchanted with the speech recognition software, but the love affair usually rekindles quickly.

After all, I didn’t have to type a single word to create this blog post. The Dragon is 3x faster in writing down my words than I am. I like that!

And because I have severe RSI type problems, I could not run my business with Dragon. Speech recognition is not only a productivity hack for me, or just the tool that I teach. It is hugely important for running my business.

Personally,  I’ll accept the occasional stinky fart and give the Dragon a kiss anyway!

Now off to restart my computer…. while I leave you to to imagine what Dragon could do for YOU!

If you are wondering if a Dragon should be your next pet, don’t hesitate to ask your question in the comments below.

Hi, I'm Janneke and I'm your go-to person for Dragon speech recognition software help.

When I got severe repetitive strain injury issues over 20 years ago, I didn't want to give up using the computer. So I learned all about controlling the PC with speech recognition and dictating my documents and emails.

I've now been a speech recognition software trainer and consultant for almost two decades, teaching over 2000 people handsfree productivity!

My online courses offer self-paced learning and I also love running my membership for Dragon users. For those in need of an intensive training or custom speech command creation, I am available for one-on-one calls.
